Kayaking in the rain, cooking oysters and snuggling down in Prawn Palace at Garden Bay.
Garden Bay, British Columbia
Woke to the expected heavy rain. after discussion with the friendly staff ar John Henry's Resort and Marina we moved from Mussel Bay cabin (no views) to Prawn Palace (stunning bright red cabin with yellow shutters and an oceanside position with amazing views!)
Went for a run when the rain eased but soon realised that in this weather we might as well just get suitably dressed and go kayaking.
They had two really nice single kayaks with rudders and we set off to explore Garden Bay and Pender Harbour, stopping on the way to pick up some oysters lying just under the surface of the shallow water covring the rocks in the middleof the harbour. We paddled out and around Martin Island and back again. There was plenty to see - lots of birds and purple sea anenomes. Back indoors we were happy to snuggle down with our books, looking out over the rain swept harbour over hot mugs of tea.
After a battle to shuck our oysters Bill sauteed them with butter and white wine to create a gourmet lunch, and we whiled away a very contented afternoon indoors, with intermittent trips back and forth to us the launderette.
We ventured out for dinner at the Grasshopper Pub - a nice but strange place that felt like the sort of place you would eat at an airport with huge TV screens showing ice hockey matches allaround the walls. No doubt it has spectaular views during daylight hours. It served good yam fries and beer, which was pretty much what we had come for anyway!
