We headed off from Broken Hill mid morning, heading for Wentworth some 280km south along the Silver City Highway. The scenery started as scrub filled flat plains that eventually changed to become more 'riverina/sunraysia' in appearance with more trees, greener grass and slight undulating hills. Along the way we passed a time zone change sign, which means that after changing our clocks 30 minutes forward we were finally back on Victorian time again.
Strange that Broken Hill, while in NSW, goes on SA time, while the rest of NSW is on EST.
We stopped for lunch at a rest stop along to way, arriving in Wentworth by 3pm and made our way to the Willowbend Caravan Park on the bank of the Darling River. We decided to base ourselves here for a week, with a powered site right on the bank of the river. This will be a good chance to relax and unwind as our amazing trip is fast coming to an end.
After setting up we got to sit and watch the river. We saw a private paddle steamer go by and watched the incredible bird life on the river, including ducks, swans and as the sun set we were treated to the sight of dozens of pelicans cruising the water, duck diving below the surface when they found tasty fish.
We BBQ'd chicken burgers for dinner with roasted vegetables and headed inside to eat. Later, I went outside and could still see, thanks to the bright moonlight, lots of pelicans swimming by. It was quite magical.
Looking forward to exploring this area further, even though we were here two years ago for a quick visit.
Night night xx
