Today Trevor, Dee, John and I travelled to the Isle of Wight for a 3 day break. The car trip to the ferry at Portsmouth took less than 30 minutes. Although it is overcast there is no rain and the weather is warm. We made the 45 min ferry trip to Fishbourne.
With the aid of Dee's navigating we made our way south to Sandown where we had a bit of a look around shops. We used the public toilets there and it has been a long time since I have used a toilet where you have to pull the chain to flush. It was decorated very old fashioned except for where you washed your hands. There was a hole in the wall and you put your hands in and some soap would drop on your hand and next minute the water started running. It gives you just enough time to wash your hands and then a blower comes on. Dee got caught out as pulled her hands out before the blower was finished and put them back in and the whole procedure started again. There certainly is an art to washing your hands here.
From Sandown we went to Ventnor. This has always been a favourite place for Iris and Les to come particularly the Spyglass Inn where we had lunch. It is set by the ocean and has great views of beach. We sat outside and enjoyed the sunshine and sights. The meal was really nice.
We watched different things going on at the beach whilst having lunch. There was a group of pre-schoolers enjoying a day out and another group of older children sat on the beach having lunch but neither group went in the water. However there were quite a few people in the water anyway. But they all struggled on the rough surface of the beach. You really need some sort of footwear as the stones are a bit sharp.
After spending a relaxing two hours at the Spyglass Inn we headed to our accommodation. On the way out the waitress recognised Dee and asked about Iris and Les. She wrote a hello card with the Spyglass Inn for Dee to give to them. What a really nice thought!!!
We still had a bit of time to kill as we couldn't book in till 4pm. We stopped at Godshill which is a quaint old town with many little shops. There were many tourist buses there so it was very busy. It was relaxing just looking at the shops although I think John and Trevor were bored.
Finally we arrived at our accommodation at Rookley. Although the accommodation seemed fine the TV and Wi-Fi was terrible. Trevor and John wanted to watch the football game with England versus Costa Rica and it kept cutting out. The Wi-Fi just didn't work at all even though it was supposed to be available at the cottage. Dee complained but it didn't help. We ended up watching the game in the reception area and were able to use the Wi-Fi there as well.
Overall the day was good and the most we could hope for in the cottage was sleep.
