The 14th started much like the 13th for me and Laura. Sleepy so very sleepy, so we deserved our lay in. Once we were up and about it dawned on us that we were soon to run out of booked accomdation! So we revised our originally plans of using the bus from Brisbane to Cairns (2 12 hour night buses) and booked a flight (2 hours). Once booked we extended our time in Sydney and planned out the next few places. Making us both feel a little more relaxed, we are not the type to wake up with no more places to sleep booked.
We then walked to the Harbour to see the bridge and opera house. Two magnificent structures that define Sydney and prehaps the most iconic buildings in Australia. Unfortunately Sydney was in the mist of the tail end of a Typhoon, courtesy of Japan so the heavens opened, which of course is a nicer way of saying it pissed down.
Not able to find the elusive Tall Ships habour tour (a common theme for the coming days) we decided to escape the rain and grab an overdue lunch before entering an opal museum. Laura appears to have picked up her fathers eye for spotting museums (tales of her Ireland and America trip have been told repeatedly). Since learning about opals in Freemantle we were keen on finding more out about them. The museum was interesting and informative around how opal fossils are created from decaying organisms. The bonus was the free opal pin badge which the woman behind the counter begrudgingly gave us, until she realised we were generally interested and had some knowledge of opals. Then again she was German so it may have just been her.
On our walk back to the hostel we took shelter from the rain in a Westfield's shopping centre where we came across a Magnum 25th celebration stall. You could create your own magnum with the chocolate and toppings provided. I think I gained 2 stone that day!
The evening was mostly spent in our room due to the huge thunder storm, where one step outside would have you soaked through. So much so reception were handing out towels to all those that arrived. We did manage to borrow some ourselves as the wind and ran had caused our windows to leak slightly!
