Today we headed to Peles Castle in the town of Sinaia. They do guided tours around the reception rooms of this amazing castle which was only built around 1900! Very beautiful and set in a valley with snowy peaks behind.
We drove towards Bucharest and as we were getting closer a stone must have got flicked up or something and with a huge crash, one of the front windows of the truck broke, showering the people in the front row with glass. Fortunately auto-glass breaks into little bits rather than shards so no-one was hurt, but we had to make the rest of the trip with the front window blowing a gale into the truck. We picked up some perspex to replace the window tomorrow.
We also stopped at a supermarket for lunch which was absolutely rammed with people. We realised then that it is Orthodox Easter this weekend and tomorrow everything will be shut for Good Friday, so people were out buying up as much food as they could pack into multiple trolleys. We managed to get some food though and get out although it was a bit crazy.
Our campsite north of Bucharest is nice and tree'd. We are surrounded by spring wildflowers, it's quite nice. And the best thing is that there are showers. Hooray!
Made it through Transylvania with no vampires, only stray dogs. Pretty sure they didn't bite anyone although they kept people company when they went to the toilet.
On Friday we went into Bucharest to have a look around. The bus ride in was pretty nice.. not sure how we keep getting these bus trips for free but we can never find anywhere to buy tickets. The group had a bit of a big night last night so I don't think many people made it into the city.
We visited the Palace of Parliament which is the second biggest building in the world after the Pentagon. We did a guided tour through just a few of the massive marble halls. It was only finished in 1984 so all that marble and gold leaf must have cost a fortune! The city isn't as nice as others we've been visiting but there are some nice buildings around and long boulevards with fountains. We found some internet in a churchyard but some little kids came up and started talking to us in Romanian. they were very cute and the oldest one knew how to spell her name, Elena, on the keyboard. She was probably about 7 and not at all shy! Not sure where their parents were, maybe inside at the church. Anyway we might stay away from trying to get internet in public from now on.
