Early start today to head out of Budapest and across the flat eastern part of Hungary. We reached the border just after lunch and had to stop for a passport check, no hassles. The roads immediately on the other side of the border were terrible - I guess because so many trucks pass through there every day. There is a lot of construction work going on there both on the roads and buildings. I guess they have got a massive cash injection since joining the EU.
We drove for a while across some flat fields and eventually reached the foothills of some mountains - our campsite tonight is a bush camp off the road on a hill. There is a mountain range on the other side of the valley with snow on the high peaks. Finally the first chance to cook on a wood fire!
It was freezing cold overnight! Some people said they had ice on their tents. It certainly felt cold enough.
Another drive day through the beautiful Romanian countryside, farmland and hills, mountains with snow and very flat plains. The buildings are quite basic but the houses look very homely. Roads are getting bad in places, but still fairly smooth riding. The country is beautiful but unfortunately covered in rubbish. Like, completely covered, everywhere you go. it's a bit sad really.
We made it to Bran castle, which is billed as Dracula's castle but in truth Vlad the impaler didn't own it, he may or may not have even visited it. Unfortunately we arrived just after 4 and even though it was supposed to close at 6, they had closed at 4, and not opening until midday tomorrow. So we wandered around the naff markets around the castle area. We headed a short way up the road before making camp.
