The translator ;) A lot has happened over the last couple of days. I will see if I can recount it all! Full steam ahead! I arrived on Tuesday the 27th. I checked in and found the dorm that I was supposed to be sleeping in. I was only booked in for one night, and so I shared the room with 7 others who were leaving the next day. I quickly decided to stay so that I could take the Open Water diving certificate course. Next day I moved to another dorm. I registered for the course and started 4 hours later, with 5 films @ 40 mins each!! There was only one other person in my group but it was fun anyway. As my buddy (as its called in diving-slang) was going to have a tattoo done the next day, we decided to study the theory that evening, that we otherwise would have done the next afternoon. We ended up being there from 4pm til 9pm including the breaks we took now and again. After that I was so ready for bed!! Especially because we had to be at the course again at 8am the next morning. Chlorine and saltwater –my hair loves it! On Wednesday we started in the pool. We had a swimming test that lasted 10 mins (yes – easy, right?) We were both surprised and I realized how long it was since I had been swimming or kept afloat for minutes at a time without a break. It didn’t make it easier when the instructor started explaining about the equipment whilst we desperately tried to keep ourselves afloat whilst taking in all the information we were getting. But we managed, and then it was time to try out the equipment. Once we had that under control, we jumped into the water and learned the different skills and everything else we needed to know. It was really cool, as that was the first time I tried breathing under water! In the afternoon, I had time to myself, having done the theory work the evening before. I went down to the beach, but must have fallen asleep. As well as bad hair due to the chlorine and saltwater, I also ended up being sunburned. I didn’t feel it whilst I was in the sun, but after a few hours my back was burning and I discovered that I was also burned at the back of my knees and other odd places, Out with the Aloe Vera aftersun!!!. In the evening I was out eating with a girl from France and a girl from England. After we had eaten we saw a fire show on the beach and ended up going to see a Ladyboy show. It was free entrance but we each had to buy a drink, which was on the other hand extremely expensive, but still cheaper than other places. It was a really good show – nothing to do with striptease, but dance to different songs. It was really entertaining! Afterwards I went to bed because we were meeting with the instructor at 9am. I had only one problem – a sunburned and tender back! First dive in open water! The next morning we met with the instructor to learn what’s called table skills. Its all about working out how long you can dive at various depths, based on how many dives you do and how much time there is between each dive. Afterwards we were tested on it, and luckily we both passed. But that wasn’t the hardest part. Later we were diving again, but as my buddy had had an accident on a motorbike the day before he couldn’t dive because of his cuts. I chose to go with an different instructor and her group for the dive. We were diving twice – once at 8m and once at 12 m. It was fantastic to get so close to the coral reefs and the fish! But on the first dive I had issues with buoyancy (you have to find the balance between floating and sinking by changing the amount of air in the BCD) but I kept floating or sinking. On the second dive I had problems with the mask – water kept getting under it, so I got practice in my mask skills :,. Certified woohoo! This morning I got up at 6 am to meet the others at 6:30am for a morning dive. I felt really ill on the boat, not sure if it was just seasickness, but the fruit I had eaten came back up. Lovely – I know. But as soon as I was under the surface of the water I forgot all about that, and it was just fantastic. We started at 18m and I had problems again. First I couldn’t sink even though I had no luft in my BCD so I had to have more weight on, but when we got to the bottom and had been there for a while, I suddenly sank and hit my knee on the reef. It really hurt, but I got everything under control and went a little higher and got better buoyancy. It was impossible to forget that I had scraped my knee thanks to the saltware. When I got on the boat it was quite easy to see I had scrapes over my kneecap where it was bleeding, but it stopped after the second dive @ 14m depth. I got it cleaned up and antiseptic cream applied to avoid infection. I am now certified to dive in open water! Which is great! And I bought a cd with pictures from our last dive for posterity Koh Tao is a really lovely island and has everything, including the most beautiful sunsets, but lacks the cheap food stalls there were in for example Bangkok.
