Breakfast at 7am! The deal is we all have to take our tents down and pack everything away before breakfast, bear this in mind when we have some really early starts on the trip! Anyway Vincent prepared some amazing fresh pancakes for breakfast. There is also always a supply of cereals and bread with various jams, etc.
As soon as we were ready we were on the road once again heading for the Namibian border. The area is vast and desolate with very little vegetation although the rocks have a certain rugged beauty. Picture an old western movie with John Wayne and you'll get the idea. So most of us got a few hours' sleep in the truck!
Every few hours we stopped to stretch our legs or have lunch under some gum trees (not native as they were imported from…guess where… Australia) and our final town in South Africa was Springbok where we stopped to get some more supplies. For the next few days we would be far from any towns or shops!
We arrived at the Orange River at about 4pm where we would camp for the night. The river itself forms the natural border between South Africa and Namibia and although not very clear, is warm and does not contain any crocs so is safe to swim in. After putting up our tents most of the group got changed and went to cool off. Two of the guys, a German and a Brazilian swam across to Namibia and back again! Lucky they weren't caught! The current was very strong and those who swam further had a serious workout getting back to the jetty.
Dinner tonight was pork chops with roasted vegetables and pap, a traditional South African dish made from maize. It's actually quite nice and Adam went back for seconds…as usual!
The campsite has a bar so most of us enjoyed a drink or two before getting yet another early night. It turns out this whole trip is exhausting, even when you're doing nothing and sleeping all day on the truck!
