We woke this morning to a beautiful day by Loch Melfort. We could see the breath of the Highland Cattle in the field outside our patio door, the mists on the surrounding hills a hazy pink glow to the skies. The only sounds were the birds and the water of the Loch lapping against the shore... Heaven...
Breakfast was equally heavenly looking out of the large picture windows in the dining room. A full Scotch Breakfast started my day right, and according to Ruth, she had the finest kippers she has ever tasted, caught in Loch Fyne, about 20 miles back the way we had cycled the previous day.
We had the foresight to stay the night in a not only a great hotel, but also one at the top of a hill. Our day started at 30mph. The undulating roads kept our speed up for the following 20ish miles to Oban where we stocked up on lunch and enjoyed the sunshine on a bench with an apple.
Setting off again up the hill out of town, the good roads continued around the lochs and over the bridges to Fort William, which arrived an hour earlier than expected. A perfect rainbow over Loch Linnhe welcomed us to town. In our search for coffee we passed numerous other cyclists with similarly loaded panniers. Including 12 spaniards who had burnt out the brakes on all 12 of their bikes cycling through Glen Coe and were packed around the bike shop, bikes upside down, wheels off.
We set off again from Fort William, coffee furled and tyres inflated into the Great Glen. Where we stopped for food at the Monument to the Commandoes and cycled the length of one and a half lochs to arrived at our destination for the night, Invergarry.
