This morning, we started to make our way out to Milford Sound, a two hour drive out from Te Anau into a Heritage Parkland. The drive has got to be one of the best in the world. The scenery is stunning, and seems to change around every corner. There are lakes so clear that the mountains are reflected in them (Mirror Lake), and huge mountains with avalanches of trees. As it was raining, there are hundreds of little waterfalls all around us.
We pulled over at one point, to take a couple of scenic photos, when we noticed two Keas in the car park. Keas are large alpine parrots, and known for their boldness and cheekiness. Jacklyn ran out to look at them and take a few photos, while I decided to change out of my shorts into some warmer jeans, in the back of the camper. It was going to be a quick change, so I left the curtains open. Just as I was about to pull down my shorts, a large tour bus pulled up, and everyone piled out, and started taking photos of our camper! Turns out, of the Keas was walking around on our roof. Jacklyn of course thought it was hilarious that 50 tourists nearly got pictues of the parrot on a camper, with me half naked in the window!
Keas really are brats. They seem to have a thing about rubber seals, and attacked the silicon seal around the air vents on the top of our camper. They also went for the door seals on a couple of cars that were nearby!
After our pleasant encounter, we arrived in Milford, and boarded a boat for a two hour cruise around Milford Sound. Amazing view, but was a little stunted by low lying cloud, and patches of fog. It gave the whole place a real mystic feel. I could imagine how this place must look on a clear day!
