Happy New Year and what a magical fireworks display we witnessed last night, quite unlike any other. If truth be told, the show began around 2pm, continuing non stop, both sides of the waterways, until the early hours. No grand classical overtures blasting out from supersize subwoofers. Not one sign of a crowd control barrier, positioned every which way along the harbour, restricting your movements. Not even a glimmer of a countdown clock, followed by a badly pre recorded version of Auld Lang Syne (whose lyrics we all mumble through year on year, without fail). Instead, the symphonic overtones were supplied by the booms on the mountain and the fireworks cascading from every corner of the sky. You didn't know where to look but wanted to look everywhere all at once; this side of the harbour, the other side of the harbour, the top of the mountain, the luxury liners anchored up, the distant villages along the horizon. They were all at it but as opposed to being an unruly cacophony of noise, they all played a part in an almost symphonic and breathtaking display of warmth and colour (better than any of the world's city shows we tune our TVs in to watch every year). We sashayed out through the carousel door of our hotel, into the chilling air, at around 23:30 and, within seconds, the smiles on our faces spoke volumes, as the skies above Tromso grew mesmerisingly frantic and eventually became awash with sparklers, colours, flares and frenzied activity heralding the start of a new year, 2015!
