Day and Date: 8/16/17, Wednesday
Time Leaving: 9:45 a.m. Temp: 55 degrees
Saying for the day: You don't stop having fun when you get old - you get old when you stop having fun.
16th: So sad to leave; hugs from Clay and a picture of us all - and more hugs!
Off we go, leaving the coast. Over my favorite "Bridge" one more time.
Go through a lot of farming country, seeing lots of dust devils in the fields. Pass lots of Hazel Nut tree farms. Driving through the Cascades and the beautiful tall pines, probably Douglas Fir trees.
Snow ahead on Diamond Peak in the Cascades. Pass a ski lodge at the peak of the mtn. we're travelling. 5130' up. Nice and cool.
17th: Head out for Crater Lake, about an hour and a half drive. Lots of vehicles headed that way today. Up the mtn. we go to 7,000' and 68 degrees. Travel around the Rim of Crater Lake - great views but smoke from area forest fires is coming closer.
Eat at the Lodge and have the 1926 Prosperity sandwich; this was served in the Lodge a few years after it was opened (1915) Up here we see lots of Hemlock trees, shaped with a tapered top so they can easily dislodge any snow that accumulates.
18th: (On our way to CA today) Pass Klamath Lake, an enormous lake of about 26 miles in length. We see one lone Trumpet Swan on the lake. Now we're in real Lava country, all over the ground, small rocks and enormous ones. We also see a lot of tumbleweed.
Pass by Eagle Lake and there is a flock of White Pelicans huddled together near the shoreline. What a sight.
Arrive: Crescent, Oregon, Big Pines RV Park at 1:40 pm;
How long staying: 2 nights in Big Pines and 2 nights in Susanville.
Where to next: Susanville, CA, Susanville RV Park; arrive at 1:35 pm. 95 degrees!
