Will-and-Marge's Great Adventure to Alaska
Thursday, April 20, 2017 Leave at 8:30 a.m. and drive 220 miles.
57 degrees and a beautiful sunny day.
Saying for the day: "It's a child, not a choice."
First day on the road and we are thankful for the nice weather and little traffic. Cross the Appalachian Trail and then into NC at 9:25. Lots of solar farms.
Into TN at 10:20 with a 'whiz’ of a ride down Wolf Mtn. and across Old Potato Creek.
Pass the River (Ocoee?)where the white water rafting trials took place for the summer Olympics out of Atlanta. I think it was 1997. Lots and lots of Wisteria trees line the bank, all in full bloom.
Chattanooga at noon.
Big hold up on I-24; 5 mph for a long time. Lots of trucks. Off we go again; 25 minutes seemed like a long time to be going so slow.
Into GA and right back into TN again and now on Central Time. Cross the Tennessee River.
Arrive Manchester, TN at 12:30, at Old Stone Fort, an archeological site and our campground for the night. 12:30 pm. A pretty little park, surrounded by trees, very relaxing.
This campground is also right next to Arnold AFB; named for Hap Arnold, the founder of the Air Force. A little trivia for you.
Get all set up and relax for the evening with a little walk around the park.
Facts About the Old Stone Fort
The Old Stone Fort was built during the Middle Woodland Period, 1,500-2,000 years ago. Native Americans used this area continuously for about 500 years, eventually leaving it abandoned. By the time European settlers arrived, it was unclear of what the area had been used for which resulted in it being misnamed as a fort. In 1966, the state of Tennessee purchased 400 acres of the Chumley estate as the core of what is now Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park.
