We are VERY Sorry we have been told you are unable to make comments. It isn't right but must have to do with them shutting down this month. Please make comments on the pictures I believe that is still possible.
Temp: 36 degrees High of 71 Blue Sky and Unlimited Visibility!
States Today: Alaska
Saying for the day: Faith can move mountains, but don't be surprised if God hands you a shovel.
We woke to sunshine and no clouds at all and walked into the small town of Talkeetna today to look at all of the little shops and cafes. The people are very friendly here, and I guess they would be, their tourist season is upon them! Princess Cruises owns a lot of the town and the tourists are crowding in here, even now, by Alaska Train, the Princess Busses and the KE Alaska Airline. It's very, very busy today as more and more busses continue coming into town. They are usually only there for a couple of hours.
Will met and talked with a fellow from Harrisburg, PA and we both met a couple from GA. Probably our biggest thrill today was actually getting to "SEE" Denali in all it's glory - and, from 2 different vantage points. WOW! She outdid herself today with the flawless blue sky and all of the beauty of her ermine/snow robe.
We found so many beautiful things in the shops from real fur hats, to ivory necklaces, to moose antlers - all for sale, but OHHH the price tags! One café sold reindeer on a stick, caribou and bison burgers, and skeeter fries. We never did find out what the skeeter fries were all about. Lol
A little bit about Talkeetna: Travelers appreciate Talkeetna's authentic, laid-back Alaskan lifestyle. Main Street is pretty much a walking-only area.
Climbing Denali has always been a challenge. Last year, 1,131 climbers left Talkeetna in the spring to make their attempt. Most climbers are flown to Base Camp, heavily loaded with warm, modern clothes, high tech foods and state of the art gear. The average is 50% make it to the top.
Talkeetna is right on the shores of the Susitna & Talkeetna rivers. We walked to the end of Main Street to see the confluence of these mighty rivers. A few of the pictures of Denali were taken from this location with the rivers in the foreground. It could not have been a better day to take pictures of this greatest mountain of North America.
The Alaska Railroad runs through town as well. Our campsite is about 50 yards from the tracks. Whistles at 11:30 PM aren't too welcoming even if it is daylight. This is the last whistle-stop train in the United States.
With a population in the hundreds, this town is on a 15 mile dead end road with a Whistle-stop train, two airports..city and State and Bus service??? Also when I asked about law enforcement I was told that is one of the things that keeps taxes down. WE don't have any kind of official law enforcement. We take care of things ourselves. We don't have any trouble here, our town has a reputation. I was also told the close official police is 65 miles away. (Alaska State Police) Very interesting because there are thousands and thousands of tourists that come through here.
A fun day for us both and off to Anchorage tomorrow.
How long staying: 1 more night
Next stop: Anchorage, AK Creekwood RV
