Thankfully today we had a full day to enjoy the delights of Hoi An. We made the most of not having to have an early start for once & had a bit of a lie in. Nice! We decided to hire some bicycles so that we could see a bit more of the city & see the beach that was a good 4km away. Now clearly the Vietnamese like to look after their bikes as much as they do their trains. Between us we had a chain that popped on & off at will, no brakes & loose handlebars that turned but didn't turn the wheel!! A visit to the beach revealed to us that during the 'off season', sod all happens down there. So we got a bite to eat & returned to the city centre & went to the riverside to look at the market. Here I experienced my first bit of bartering & came away with some swimming shorts that started off at 400,000 Dong (yes, we laughed at the name of their currency too) for 200,000 Dong. How long the stitching lasts in them is another matter. That evening we let the group go off for dinner & Joel & I attended a cooking school. We assisted in the preparation of 3 dishes. First up was hoi An style Spring Rolls, followed by a Hoi An beef salad & main course was Grilled Ocean Fish in Banana Leaves. Obviously the best part of the school was eating it all afterwards & we were treated to 2 additional courses that we didn't help to make as it was a secret family recipe. I'm pretty certain though that their Dad wasn't Colonel Sanders!! Needless to say that we were absolutely stuffed afterwards, but still found room for a few beers at Tam Tam Bar. Weplayed some pool with the rest of the group that we had met up with & some random Vietnamese guys who can play pool a damn sight better than maintain bikes or trains. Vietnam remains a country that I haven't yet beaten one of their nationals at pool & it looks like staying that way!!
