We continued further down the west coast down to Franz Josef, home of the Franz josef glacier. On the way we stopped at a small museum called the bushman centre. There watched a comedy home made video on how people make a living on the coast, including possum trapping and helicopter deer recovery, which consisted of people jumping out of helicopters, trying amd failing miserably to land on deers wrestle them to the ground. All this to the "welcome to the dangerzone" top gun classic.
Franz josef was the tiniest little town ever. I set off to explore when we first got here and was back at the hostel in 10mins. People come here to explore the Franz josef glacier, but after our last glacier experience we decide not to do a climb! - Gem was getting nowhere near it anyway. We took a bus and walked the 40 minutes over to it, climbing over the warning fences as instructed by the driver. Gem and I got a bit glacier snobby as it was not as impressive as the ones we'd seen in South America and no-where near as clean. Neathertheless housed a really big cave - which was pretty cool.
One we'd finished Tom and I took another walk called the Douglas walk. - in this instance, not a walk with Douglas or through a Douglas or to see Douglas, but im sure there was some sort of connection. Instead it took us to Peters pool - The first Mirror lake we'd seen. The water really did reflect as well as a mirror. Here in New Zealand we really have seen the most diverse series of landscapes in such a small county - Fertile farmland, scrubby bush, lush green rainforests, tropical beaches, snow on the southern alps and now glaciers. Madness.
