We are Sailing
Well, it was great to be back in Kalbarri. Cheryl and I arrived yesterday afternoon. The trip down from Carnarvon was good. I was very surprised by the amount of wild goats on the roadside.
The accommodation at the resort was first class, and meals were supurb.
This morning we left at 8.00 am to go abseiling in the gorges. The Z bend gorges are about 40kms from town, in the national park. The gorges themslves are about 400 million old (for once in my life I feel young again). The Muchison river has cut it way through the old tidal sediment that forms the layers and layers of tumblagooda sandstone. You can see remnats of worms and animals in the sanstone layers.
It took us about an hour to reach our destination. There were 9 of us abseiling today, and different countries were well represented. After getting out harnesses, and hats, and a saftey induction, we set off for our 2km trek down to the abseiling area. For about the only time in the last year it was raining. As it turned out, the instructor said we were lucky, as it meant it wasn't going to be too hot. Finally, we get there. After a few more instructions, we all went up to the small 25m Cliff for our first abseil. Cheryl was about the 4th person to jump over the edge. She was a little nervous, but once she got the hang of it ( pardon the pun!) she loved it. I have included a photo or two of Cheryl. Once we did 3 goes on the small cliff, we then had a go at the 35m face. This was a little more exciting, because there is a large overhang, and then nothing. Just you swinging in the wind. Cheryl had got so confident by then that she stopped about halfway up to take in the view.
Once we all finished the abseil, we stopped by the river for a quick lunch. Then all good things come to and end. Theres the bloddy long walk uphill back to the bus. Phew, it was tough!
Another 40 mins and we were back in town. We filled in the day by going out to the Australian Bird Farm. Like the fish at Coral Bay, we saw many beautiful Australian birds, and a few additional ones from Africa and Brazil. Well worth the visit.
Once we got back cleaned up and went down to the restaurant, had another sensational meal, and a few more drinks.
