We are Sailing
As you have already noticed the date on the last blog is wrong. It should have read the 28/07. I will eventually work this blogging out. Even found the spell check today.
After having another great breakfast at the Herodian we checked out a caught another Kamikaze cab to the Bus station in the back blocks of Athens. We caught the 'express' bus to Preveza. A four hour trip to the West of Athens.
The trip great. Firstly we crossed the Corinth canal, which we will later come back through on our way to the Greek Islands. The canal was built by the French and the Greeks, and is very narrow and virtually straight up on either side. The larger vessels that enter the canal have priority, and craft like ours have to follow. It is going to be interesting sailing down it. A little further on we stopped in Rion for a short break, then we went over the very beautiful Andirrion bridge. The suspension bridge was opened in 2004 in time for the Olympic games, and is certainly a good piece of engineering.
The freeway we are travelling on would put ours to shame, but like everything good, it comes to an end. As we get closer to Preveza the roads are not as good, and the countryside begins to get very steep. Along the way you see roadworks that are only
partially completed, railway formations and tunnels works done, but incomplete. This all because they have run out of money.
After 5 hours we finally arrived in Preveza. Before you come into Preveza, you enter a tunnel that takes you under the main harbour. (85 meters under). We then catch a taxi to Cleopatra Marina to meet up with Stuart and Heather. Finally we met them at 5.30, about an hour and a half later than expected. Never the less, they kept the beers cold for us.
The first night in Preveza was in the Motel Units in the Marina. We had to carry all our luggage up 4 flights of stairs! Once we did that, the boys went down to check out the boat. For Brian it is like catching up with a close friend. Stuart and Heather arrived the day earlier, and did a bit of work on it before we arrived. All we want to do now it get it in the water.
