Took a black cab tour with Peter this morning. We went to Shankill Rd first, which is a Protestant/loyalist area and saw all the UFF murals, then to the peace wall which separates Shankill Rd from Falls Rd (the Catholic area). The wall is 5.8 miles long and extends up into the mountains (there are 47 more walls like this in the city). There are seven gates in the wall and they are only open between 6 am and 6 pm (no exceptions, not even police or ambulance). The wall is very high and has scars from fire bombs on it. We then went to the memorial gardens in Bombay St which are dedicated to members of IRA and others killed in that street (again, there are many more of these in the city - 38 in total). 70% of the population are still segregated and live behind the walls!
We were back in Republic of Ireland by afternoon and did a quick tour of Dublin before venturing to St James' Gate (Guinness brewery). Had my first ever Guinness in the tower on the seventh floor of the brewery which has great views of the city!
Tonight we went to an Irish cabaret - singing, dancing and comedy - very entertaining!
