We anchored at Nynashamn (1 hr drive from Stockholm) and went ashore by tender (220 people in each one). Axel picked us up at the Royal Opera House and took us for a private tour. Walked around Gamla Stan (old town) and watched the changing of the guard at the palace. Stockholm is built on 14 islands with the Baltic on one side and fresh water river and canals on the other. The islands are all close together in the centre and there are lots of bridges linking them. We went and looked at a street of old wooden houses that date back to the 16th century and then up to Katarinahissen (a lookout with great views). Over to Djurgarten (an island set aside for recreation) for lunch - very peaceful and quiet compared to the rest of the city. The Nobel Prize gala dinner and award ceremony is held in the City Hall each December (all except for the peace prize which occurs in Oslo).
After lunch visited a market which has lots of Swedish delicacies and products - very interesting, especially looking at the fish and seafood. We finished up with a drink on a floating restaurant/bar on the north island.
On the way back to Nynashamn we passed the ice hockey dome which has a gondola on the roof and saw people climbing the roof!
