Saturday 20th July, We arrived in Broome and found we were too late for the morning markets much to the boys delight. We called into the visitors centre to check the status of available caravan parks. Most are full at this time of the year with grey nomads. When they are all full, places like the Pistol Club and PCYC open up a grassed area for the overflow and these are advertised on a blackboard outside the centre. Chris and I decided it was the PCYC that we needed to head to evening knowing that it would probably be unpowered, but that was ok and it was close to Town Beach where we hoped to see the Stairway to the Moon the following night.
After booking in and being assured of a powered site the following day we headed out to do some shopping. We had lunch in a little café and spent over $100 in Woolies giving us a 17c petrol voucher that would come in handy when it was time to refuel before leaving.
Glenn and I had a little snooze in the afternoon in preparation for the trip down to Cable Beach for the sunset. We took some champagne and nibbles and watched the camels taking tourists on their sunset ride up the beach while others kicked the footy around. It was lovely.
Glenn and I went to church in the Broome Cathedral, a beautiful wood and tin building with a bell tower. Nothing like our cathedral in Perth but homely and welcoming. We moved onto our "limited" powered site and after moving over Chris and I head into the markets. We had a lovely wander around; there were lots of stalls with jewellery depicting the boab tree or stairway to the moon. Chris bought a nice top, a lacey cardigan and something for Taylor's birthday.
After lunch we drove around to have a look at the wharf and then along a dirt track alongside a rocky coastline, Gantheaume Point and Reddell Beach, red cliffs and white sand. Up near the lighthouse we had a look at the replica casts of the prehistoric Dinosaur footprints, Broome is renowned for prehistoric activity. On our way back to camp we stopped off for a soft serve ice cream, yummy!!
The following morning, Monday 22nd July, we did some last minute shopping, drove through Chinatown and had a look at the pearl luggers.
We spend a couple of hours at Matso's Brewery sampling the different boutique beers. You chose 5 to sample in a glass about the size of a small vegemite glass. Glenn thought the Mango beer was definitely the best. I didn't try the beer but did have three different scoops of Simmo's ice cream, Yum!
We were a day early for the Stairway to the Moon but went down to Town Beach to watch it come up over the water. There was a haze on the horizon so the moon didn't appear until after it got above that level. I did however get some good photos of another Boab Tree at sunset!
See you all soon, Virginia and Glenn xx
