We left on Saturday 13th July and headed into Kununurra to do some shopping and head out to a free camp near Wyndham. We had heard all the caravan parks in Kununurra were all booked out and weren't taking bookings as the Agriculture Show was in town and the place was packed. Before heading to the shops Chris and I made our way to the Tourist Information Centre to pick up some pamphlets on the area. It was packed in there too. When we did get a change to ask we found that the show actually finished that night and although the caravan parks weren't taking bookings most had unpowered sites. You just needed to rock up and try your luck. So instead of doing the shopping we headed back to the cars and suggested to the boys that perhaps we should organise a site here and give Wyndham a miss altogether. So off we went and managed to get into Hidden Valley on an unpowered site for the night with provision to go onto a powered site the following day.
It has been pretty hot right across the top, 35'most days, 5' above average for this time of year. Instead of sitting around we went for a drive and had a look at the Zebra Rock Gallery where Zebra Rock only found in Kununurra is made into lovely jewellery pieces but a bit too expensive for me and not really to my liking. The Ivanhoe Crossing is not used for crossing now days but people drive across for the fun off it. It is a free flowing river crossing, Crocodiles and all and I was happier standing back on the bank and watching. Four young guys were pretty game standing on the crossing up to their knees fishing, good luck! We also visited the Diversion dam and drove out to the Hoochery Run Distillery, it was decided that we would come back here for lunch and catch the tour the following day. We were able to move to a powered site of the Sunday which made Glenn happy as he is not happy with the heat. We went out to the Hoochery as planned but ended up giving the tour a miss when we found out it was $12 for a ½ hour tour. The Eagles v's Dockers game was on TV mid-afternoon so we settled down to watch that. Unfortunately our earlier move blocked our TV reception and we had to listen to the radio instead. It sounded like a great game up until the 4th quarter. Oh well!
