Thursday 25th July, We left around 8am and headed towards Roebourne with a cuppa in mind. We past the Roebourne Prison (its huge) and headed out to Cossack an old pearling town long since abandon after a cyclone in 1907. Some of the builds have been restored by BHP and are now heritage listed. The old court house looks fantastic and the court room is still set up. There was a tearoom operating out of the old customs building selling scones and homemade pies. Glenn was very tempted but Roger suggested fish and chips for lunch at Point Samson as there are well known for a good feed. Glenn didn't need much convincing.
here is mining activity all over the place. Point Samson looked like a sleepy little town but apparently is a busy port for ore aswell. The fish and chips were great too. From here we drove into Karratha and I did a quick shop at Woolies while the others stayed in the cars. Karratha is a very busy town with lots of accommodation for the mining industry. For every private vehicle on the road there is a mine vehicle. While driving out to Hearson, a popular tourist spot we past numerous mines and travelled on a 4 lane highway obviously built by the mining industry between Karratha and Dampier. When we pulled up at Hearson we were hoping to get a look at the Dampier Archipelago which was just off shore. It must have been high tide so there wasn't much to see which was disappointing. I got some good photos of the road infrastructure on the way out.
We overnighted at a free camp near the Robe River, it was very dry and dusty! We did have a nice night around the fire again and watched for satellites.
Night, Virginia and Glenn
