Today was our full day winery tour which started at 8.30am :) I got up in plenty time to be able to have breakfast at the hostel in preparation! There was Simone, Sophie, Nicole, Phoebe and Sandy so it was a really nice group. We were going to the Stellenbosch wine region.
First winery was Vergenoegd, which was famous for the ducks they used to eat the pesticides in the vines rather than using chemicals. We tried 8 vintage wines and 1 port here, all were really good, especially the port. We had the option to finish our taster or pour the remaining out. The rest of the girls all poured most of the samples out but not me...! It was a really nice volume to be able to properly taste each one, I couldn't pour out vintage wine :) hell no.
Our next stop was the Beyerskloof, it was famous for the Pinotage grape that is only grown in South Africa. I really wanted to ship a case of 6 or 12 bottles home but the wine that I liked the most cost £36 a bottle (i always like the most expensive) and in London it would cost hundreds! It only cost €15 to send it home though that was crazy. Hmmm maybe I should have went all out! To be honest it was Dad that changed my mind because he doesn't drink red anymore and Mum doesnt drink anything but champagne so it would only be Uncle Howard and me that would appreciate it! :)
P.S. At this point I still haven't poured out any of my samples!!! I hope you are proud Scotland!
By this time it was 1pm and I was ready for lunch but we still had Tokata Winery to visit. This was the busiest winery, and we got the option to taste 6 wines, followed by olives (yuck) and olive olive (yum). This was the only winery to specialise in white wine, I wasn't that keen on the white so tried every red that was available. I ended up tasting 7 wines here (without pouring any out :) ).
Eventually we headed to somewhere for lunch, I didn't feel any effects from the wine except hungar!! I ordered my first curry since... forever and with our meal we got a glass of wine included.... Oh yeh :) Sparkling Shiraz for me!!! I ha never tried it before so why not!
VredeEnLust was the next vine yard. This place had the most enthusiastic guide ever, she was lovely and told us so much about the wine. We tried 6 wines here too but none of them tickled my taste buds! (I still haven't poured any wine out, and this place I drank Nicole's tasters too!!)
Next on todays schedule was Fairview which was founded in 1693, a fair while ago to be honest. Here we tasted 7 (or I tasted 7) wines and cheese. My favourite was the Pinotage Viognier.... An amazing red! Most of the girls sat out on the grass, I didn't even feel tipsy so maybe I can handle my drink!
I fair enjoyed my day and learnt so much about the different wines which has really made me want to do a wine course when I get back home.
Instead of Gavin (our cool tour guide) dropping us back at all our accommodation Simone, Sophie, Phoebe and I got dropped at Camps Bay, which is at the other side of Table Mountain. It was a lovely area with loads of restaurants along the beach front.
Clare, Matt, Michael and Grant met us there so the 8 of us had a meal at Zenzero. It was amazing, white table cloths, massive menu, very posh waiters and a stunning view out to the sea. I had the mussels for starter followed by a fillet steak for main! It was cooked to perfection and it was so tender. The mussels were amazing too. We all had champagne and cocktails with our meal. As I was sick of wine by this stage!
I'm sure your all thinking... Why are we eating in a place like this when I'm a backpacker!! Well the answer is that my bill came to £18 for mussels, fillet steak, 3 glasses of champers and 1 cocktail and the 10% tip. How amazing is that?!?
It was a lovely evening and we headed back to the hostel about 10.30pm. It was Clare's last night in Cape Town so it was a really nice way to spend it. The plan was to have an early night but we ended up chatting to the boys for a few hours then when we went to bed, Clare and I spoke until 2am.
It was such a giggle! I will miss Clare loads and really hope I meet up with her in Australia and if not I'm definatly going to London to see her!
Im sure I fell asleep laughing! So much fun! xxxxx
