Randa, Sam and I had booked a trip weeks ago for Robben Island Museum today. The ferry left the waterfront at 9am, so we got a taxi just after 8. I really can't think I've slept longer than 7.30am since the weekends at Brackenhurst.
It was a very interesting morning,. we had a 45 minute bus ride around the island, seeing all 4 of the prisons and the local village on the island before visiting the maximum security prison. The guided tour of the maximum security prison was by an ex prisoner therefore we heard about his personal experience of Robben Island. We got to see all the different blocks and types of cells before visiting Nelson Mandela's cell where he spent 18 years. We were also shown where he hid his book 'Long walk to freedom' while in the prison and the story about what happened when his book was discovered. He was sent to consolidory confinement and his book was burnt straight away, luckily he had managed to get a copy of his book out of the prison with a prisoner that was released. I will look forward to reading more of this history.
Phoebe, Nicole, Simone and Sophie came and met us when we got off the ferry which was really nice. We were all meant to go for lunch together before Randa had to leave to go to the airport but in the end she only had time to grab a take away and say her goodbyes.
It was sad saying goodbye to someone you've spent 40 odd nights with. Randa was heading to Turkey though to meet up with her sister for Christmas which was nice. Simone and Sophie had their tour of Robben Island booked for 2pm so they also didn't have enough time to have a sit down lunch either haha. It ended up just being Phoebe, Nicole and I. We went to a very fancy restaurant on the Waterfront that Grant, Matt and Michael had been to yesterday and it was lovely.
We then had a walk around the malls down at the waterfront before heading back to Long Street to go to the boutique shops that Phoebe wanted to see. It was all far too expensive for my liking and it wasn't really backpacking type clothes either.
I was planning a quiet evening when I got back to the hostel but that didn't really happen. It was Sams last night tonight so the boys, Clare, Sam and I headed to a local bar for drinks and dinner.
It turned out to be a really fine evening wi just a few drinks and some bar food. I had the traditional South African Bobotie again which was tasty.
It wasn't far to the hostel and we all headed back together. I phoned Shonagh for a viber chat tonight as it had been far too long since I had spoken to her.
It was a fine chilled Saturday night in Cape Town... But I've been warned tomorrow night is going to be fun!!! xxxxx
