We arrived in Durban at Tekweni backpackers quite late so we more or less went straight to bed.
The next morning we got up and looked at the notice board to see what we could do for the day. It was quite cold so we decided to go to the biggest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere called Gateway. Richard wanted to come with us so the three of us set off. To get there we had to walk about 20mins to the minibus taxi rank and from there try to find one going to the Gateway centre. It wasnt too hard to find and we arrived quite easily. It really was a big shopping centre. By now it was lunch time and we wanted to try "Bunny Chow" as we had been told it was really nice and it is a speciality in Durban. Bunny Chow is an Indian dish which is curry that is served in a hollowed out loaf of bread, so the bread is like the bowl. There was a very high Indian population in Durban. We found a place that sold bunny chow but it was only on takeaway they wouldnt let us eat in but they told us a place where we could. We went there but they didnt have any either but told us another place. This went on several times so after about half an hour and five restaurants later we finally found a place called "My Dinnes" that would let us eat in. We all order the chicken bunny chow. When it came it was massive but we tucked in. The chicken was really nice and so was the sauce, it was a bit hot tho and by the end our mouths were slightly on fire. None of us finished it, not because it was too hot but because it was too big. It was very delicious though. So havinbg stuffed ourselves we did a couple of hours shopping. I bought two T-shirts another top and a wooly hat with eyes and ears as it had been cold the last few days. Whilst shopping we came across some dodgems so like big kids we had to have a go. After that we made our way back to the carpark to try and find a taxi to take us back. We eventually got back into Durban and had our 20 minute walk back to the hostel, stopping at the spar shop on the way.
It got really cold again at night so we just sat and chatted for a while before going to bed. We got up early the next morning as the Baz Bus was coming at 8am to take us to Johannesburg, the final stop for us in Africa. The Bus drove through the Drakenburg mountains on the way providing a beautiful journey and we saw the dam that pumps water to Johannesburg from the bright blue lake that we passed. We arrived in Johannesburg about 5pm. The hostel was very nice with nice clean dorms.
We decided to venture out for something to eat. We got directions from the reception and knowing the rumours about Johannesburg we left our bags, phones and cameras iin our room and just put a couple of notes in our pocket, hoping we wouldnt look worthwhile mugging! Despite getting directions we went the wrong way but it was only slightly wrong so it didnt take us too long to find the shops and restaurants. We went in one of he first restaurants, an Italian. I had pizza and Sarah had spagetti bolognaise. On the way back we also managed to go the wrong way again but we got back fine. So we can now say we survived walking around Johannesburg in the dark at night without anything bad happening! As once again it was freezing we got in our sleeping bags and were sat chatting when in walks Richard!
The next morning we went for a walk back to the shops without getting lost this time. We walked around for a while and then went for lunch, noticing at the same time it was half price cocktail jugs from 3-5. We went back to the hostel to start packing our bags for the flight the next day and told Richard about the cocktails. So at 3pm we stopped packing and headed off for cocktails. I had one jug as im a slow drinker but Sarah and Richard got through two each. As it was our last night in Africa we decide we should come back out for a few drinks later, so we went back to finish packing and get changed. Richard came back out with us. First we went in a bar called The Office and had a drink before moving on a bit further up the road. There we ordered something called a fish bowl. When it came it didnt look like a fish bowl it was a jug of blue liquid. It tasted very sweet. After a couple more drinks we decided to go back as we were up early for our flight. We bought a pizza to share on the way home and Sarah had half her lunch left in a doggy bag. After eating our food we went to bed at about midnight.
We got up at 5am ready to go to the airport. It was time to say goodbye to Africa! :(
