We boarded the Baz Bus at 7:30am and began our adventure traveling on our own. Our first destination was Mossel bay. We arrived there just after lunch time. We were staying at the Little Brak Beach House. We were the only ones there so we had the whole of upstairs to ourselves which included a kitchen, free tea and coffee, a lounge with big comfy sofas, a dinning table and a bathroom, so it was like our own little house. We put the kettle on straight away and sat down to watch the TV something we hadnt done in a while and decided we were having a night in. We had only had a loaf of bread and a tin of beans that we picked up at a garage when the Baz bus stopped so when they told us there was a nice little restaurant just around the corner we couldnt resist. The restaurant was in the train station and was indeed very nice. After that we went back and had a girly night in on the sofa. Malibu and coke whilst watching a George Clooney film!
The next morning the man was going to the beach to surf and offered us a lift with him which we accepted. Whilst he surfed we walked around the point and acted like typical tourists. We had an icecream on the beach, built sandcastles and played on the swings. We also wealked up the cliff to the lighthouse and found some Dassies along the way, a cross between beavers and squirrels. After that we went back to the beach house to wait for the Baz bus and watched another film.
Our next stop was Oudtshoorn, we were staying at Backpackers Paradise. Here we met up with truck again so it was nice to see them again. As we still hadnt been to a shop we had beans on toast for our tea and went to the bar to catch up with Aly and Erika. The next morning we signed up for a 30 KM bike ride!! They dropped us off at Cango caves with a bicycle, a helmet and a bicycle repair kit (not that we knew how to use one). We decided not to go in the caves as the drive there had seemed very long. We set off along the road that was in the mountains, so there was either a mountain going up at the side of us with signs saying "Danger of rock falls" or a drop down the edge of the mountain. Considering I havent ridden a bike in about 20 years I think I did quite well. Quite a lot of it was downhill so we could just roll and not pedal which made it easier.
About half way after 15KM we came to Cango Ostrich farm where we had tickets for a tour around. We went inside and first of all the guide explained about why they have Ostrich farms. These days it is mainly for their meat and leather although they do use their feathers still but not as much. We then moved into the incubater but there were no eggs there as it was out of season. He explained how they test the eggs after 2 weeks to see if they are fertile or not using a lamp. Then we moved outside and the first ostrich we saw was a pygmy ostrich, it was a dwarf ostrich and only came to waist height even though it was fully grown. Next to the pygmy ostrich was Betsy and normal sized ostrich. We could go in and have a hug from Betsy. We had to put our hand under her wing and it was really warm under there and the man held some food behind us so the ostrich put its head over our shoulder and looked like it was hugging us. We stroked the neck whilst it was doing this. Sarah didnt get a hug. Then we went to the pens where there were lots of birds together. As it was out of season the males and females were in separate pens. We went to the male pen which was where we could sit on an ostrich if we wanted. A man went first and he rode the ostrich as well, it didnt look too bad as there were two men holding you on whilst it ran. It came to my turn, so still undecided if I was going to ride it or not I climbed on just to sit on it at first. They blindfold the ostrich whilst you are getting on which made you feel a bit sorry for it. So I was on it and Sarah was taking photos, the man said "do you want to ride it?" So feeling brave I said "yes" so he just wipped the blindfold off and it started to run. It was quite bouncy and it ran in a circle so i started to slip off one side. I was clinging on and the men were shouting let go so I let go. I ended up on the floor but the men had helped me down so it didnt hurt. It was quite funny it only lasted about 10seconds but was good fun. Sarah was laughing her head off at me but she wouldnt have a go after. Next you could have a massage from the ostriches so I volunteered Sarah for this one as I had just ridden one. She stood with a food bucket in her hand and she had to walk backwards towards the fence, the ostriches necks would come around her from behind and madly peck at the bucket. Occassionally pecking her instead which is where the massage comes from. Her face was a picture but she did really well as she is scared of birds. The last thing we could do was stand on an ostrich egg so we did that and then got back on our bikes to head towards the Wildlife ranch.
The journey didnt seem as long this time so I must have been getting used to it. Although when I turned into the wildlife ranch I think I took the corner too quickly and fell off the bike, oops! We went in and had a tour around for about an hour. They had lots of animals most we had seen before but some we hadnt like the meerkats and bats. We were going to do the crocodile cage diving but when we got there they were in what looked like a paddling pool, the water was really clear and they were just sat there doing nothing so we decided not to.
Getting back on the bike after the wildlife ranch was a bit painful but we only had 2KM to go to get back to the lodge. We were quite impressed it only took us less than 6 hours we thought it would have taken more. So with time to spare we went in search of a shop to buy food. We found one and bought some grocerys. After a nice meal we went to bed fairly early after our eventful day.
