We arrived in South Africa and went to our campsite which was on the banks of the Orange River. We set up our tents and went to the bar to play cards. As the sun was setting it reflected in the river and did make the river look orange. The loser of the 5th game of cards had to wear the infamous dress to wine tasting the next day. To everyones pleasure Dave lost the game of cards and would have to wear the dress. We had a very nice meal and went to bed.
The next day we set off towards the winery. We arrived and as it was our last night in a tent we had a tent putting up competition and the losers of course would have to wear the dress the next day. Me and sarah started off well, we got the poles up quite quickly and started to hook the tent onto the poles BUT disasterously the hooks had hooked themselves together and we couldnt get them unhooked without unhooking the hooks we had already put up, so needless to say we lost the race!! Of all the days for our tent to get hooked, it had never happened before, im sure Dave must have sabatarged it!! After wards it was time for the wine tasting and Dave to wear the dress!! The wines were from Highlanders Winery and the man was very good in telling us about them. We had two whites, two reds, two rose and a sparkling one. I didnt like the red wines so tipped mine into sarahs glass, she was pleased. The man said we were a very nice group one of the best overland groups he had, had in a while. I think we entertained him with all our stories along the road. Afterwards we all bought a bottle of wine each and began drinking. So much so that it drove Sarah to bush pee (something she hadnt done in 8 weeks) outside a perfectly good toilet!! It was a nice night reliving highlights of our trip.
The next morning we got up and were driving to Stellenbosh another town famous for wines. Sarah was wearing the dress to start with we had our last camp breakfast and set off. The drive wasnt too long and halfway there when we stopped at a petrol station we swopped and it was my turn to wear the dress. It wasnt really that bad as we only wore it on the truck. We arri9ved and had the afternoon to explore around the shops. There was a shopping centre so it was just like being back at home. The next day we also walked around the town and went out for our last group meal altogether.
The day after was our last journey on the truck as we were heading to Cape Town, our final destination. We arrived and emptied the truck of all our belongings and settled into our dorms. They were very nice with white duvets and pillows. That evening we were going to the rugby to watch the Stormers versus the Crusaders. We started off at the pub and got kitted out in lots of freebee merchandise before we made our way to the stadium. We had standing tickets and to get in through the tiny gate was a huge crowd of people. We got pushed and squashed it really was not very nice everyone pushing and shoving to get in, have they never heard of queueing nicly?! When we got in we were stood near the back but we could still see fine. The game was good as the atmosphere was really good. We did a mexican wave that went 3 times around the stadium. After the game we got a hot dog and made our way back to the hostel. I forgot to say Ben was wearing the dress at the rugby and we bought him a red and black wig to match, he looked great!
The next day we went for a walk around the waterfront. Robben Island was fully booked for the next few days so we made do with a boat trip around the harbour. The boat was called Spirit of Victoria but it was a bit boring really. Table mountain was also closed as it was too windy. The next day we walked around the shops in the morning and then planned our trip to Johannesburg in the afternoon. When we booked our Baz bus ticket we got a free Cape penincular tour so we booked that for the next day. Table mountain was also closed that day as it was covered with cloud.
So our last day in capetown we went on the Cape penincular tour. The bus picked us up at 8am. First we went to the harbour for a boat trip to see the seals. It was really rocky on the boat and cold. Next we went to Boulders beach to see the penguins. I liked the penguins they were cute. After that we had lunch, that was the best bit about the trip they gave us free food as we now have to buy all our food ourselves. After lunch we were driven to the Cape of good hope, the most south western point of Africa. We stood next to the sign and had our photo taken before getting back into the bus and going back to the hostel.
It was Bens birthday and our last night in Cape Town so we went to the bar and entered a pool competition. I didnt pot any balls and was out quite quickly but Wayne who was out of hospital and back with us was really good and could have won but he missed the black on purpose to let a young girl win. We said our goodbyes and went to bed as the next morning we were leaving on the Baz bus at 7:30am.
The travels on our own begins .....
