We crossed the border into Botswana and drove to a campsite in Chobe National Park. We set up our tents and Aly told us to watch out for snakes as apparently there are lots around and scorpions. In the afternoon we had the chance to go on a game drive or a game cruise but most of iust chose to relax around the pool and chill out. We had a nice evening meal and a fairly early night, we must have been worn out from Vic Falls.
The next morning we put our tents down and none of us saw any snakes or scorpions. Aly said it was the first time they hadnt seen any there. We drove to the town of Maun and arrived early afternoon. We had time to explore the shops and buy supplies for the delta trip. We were staying in the grounds of a hotel so it was very nice with a nice pool and bar area.
The next morning we got up and got ready to go to the delta. It was also my birthday!! We had scrambled egg for breakfast and loaded two cars with our tents and equipment. It was also time to say goodbye to three more people, Dianne, Diana and Jason as they werent coming to the Delta with us. We drove for about an hour to where the Okavango delta started. When we got there we could see the canoes called Mokoros waiting for us. The water was only about knee deep but we were still scared of falling out. We loaded our things in the mokoros and climbed in. I sat at the front and sarah sat behind me, we had a poler who would steer us to an island. The polers stood up at the back and pushed us along with a big stick. We travelled through canals of reeds. Most of the time the reeds would hit us in the face and splash us. Sarah didnt like it at all because she kept getting spiders and bugs on her. I think because I was at the front when the reeds pinged back off me the bugs fell off onto her. At one point we stopped and were told to stand up. So we very slowly stood up trying not to rock the boat too much and fall in, we could see some elephants close by on an island. We sat back down and carried on our way, it took about an hour and a half to reach the island where we were camping. There was nothing on the island at all. We set up our tents and the polers made a fire for us and dug a hole for a toilet! Today, my 28th Birthday, was going to be the first day I had to bush pee, What a present!! We rested in the afternoon and at night we could go on a bush walk to see the local animals. I didnt go on the walk as the bite on my foot had swollen up and turned into a hole, not good! I stayed behind and helped Aly cook the tea. When the others came back 90 minutes later they had only seen zebras so I hadnt missed out on too much. We all sat around the fire and ate dinner. They produced a chocolate cake with a big fat candle in the middle and sang happy birthday to me. Sarah had bought me a present, it was some HP brown sauce. Normally that would sound like a silly present but you can hardly get brown sauce anyway in Africa and I had been missing it on my food. So it was a really good present. They had also bought marshmellows so for a second treat after cake we had marshmellows melted on the camp fire. After a short while we went to bed as it was dark and nothing really to do.
There was another walk in the morning and I attempted to go on this one even though my shoe rubbed on my bite. We saw some elephants and walked a bit closer to them. We also saw some more zebras and walked near them until they ran off. The guides then started walking further away from camp but there were no animals in sight so I asked if i could go back as there wasnt anything too interesting to see. Also one of the new girls was a bit scared to be walking close to the animals so her and her boyfriend also came back and Sarah decided to as well. We were almost back to the mokoros when Carl the guide spotted an elephant straight ahead where we needed to walk. The other girl got upset and started crying. We had to sit and wait for the elephant to move before we could carry on. Eventually it moved and came out of the trees, it stood and looked at us for a second before walking off the other way. We could then go back to camp and have breakfast (which was yummy as now I had brown sauce to go with it). The day was spent lazing around again and playing cards. In the evening we went on a cruise around the delta to a bigger opening in the reeds to see if we could see any hippos. We didnt see any hippos but we did see another elephant very close up. It started thundering so we went back to camp. We had dinner again and that night the polers sang for us some traditional songs. They had just finished singing when it started to rain so we went to bed.
The next morning we packed our things up and got back in the mokoros for the 90 minute journey back to the mainland throught the reeds and water lillies. On the way back the reeds seemed thicker and hit us more but once again it was fun listening to Sarah scream behind me.
We went back to the hotel in Maun and once again went shopping in town and relaxed near the pool. We had a nice buffet for dinner in the bar. It was our last night in Botswana as the next day we were going to Namibia.
