Got to the airport early hours of this morning for our flight to Lima. We had to show our passports before check in and were told by the girl that our flight was overbooked and they were looking for volunteers to stay in Rio for one night. She told us they would put us in a hotel and pay all expenses and give us $600 voucher for extra flights and put us in business class tomorrow. We said we would think about it and proceeded to check in, we had a chat and thought the hotel may be in the airport which would be quite boring. The guy on the check in desk then informs us that the hotel would actually be the Sheraton Copacabana well I nearly squealed with excitement as I have been looking longingly at the posh hotels on the beach front most days as we walk past. We were both already imagining clean white sheets, fluffy towels, free toiletries maybe even a sewing kit and free food in a posh restaurant. We were told to proceed to the gate and they would let us know if they needed us to stay behind. Well we hung about hoping our names would be called but no it was not to be and we are now in a hostel in Lima. We have however had a lovely day walking around Miraflores the area of Lima we are staying in, we have also visited Huaca Pucllana which is a historic city dating back to 200 BC. It was really fascinating as the guide told us all about the history of the Lima nation who lived there which went like this. They were ruled by a high priestess who sat around all day drinking whiskey, communicating with her ancestors and getting all the minions to make bricks and build weird structures out of them (not a bad job if you can get it).
