Had a 3.00 am start this morning to start our trek in the Colca Canyon. There were 10 0f us squashed in a people carrier but we all managed to have a little nap on the way including the driver (we nearly made it down to the canyon the fast way but thankfully the guide woke him just in time!) First stop was Condor Canyon to see the condors (ugly birds!). We then set off on our first day trek which was between 3 and 4 hours mostly downhill. They forgot to mention that the path was all loose shingle and rock so not as easy as you would imagine. I managed 3 hours down and then we had to go up at this point I began to feel extremely unwell so sat at the edge of the canyon to vomit over the edge. However Nick and our guide Alex were not prepared for me to bring up my breakfast with dignity they insisted on pulling me away from the edge so I had no choice but to vomit on the path with an audience of about 30 trekkers who were waiting to pass. At this point I am wondering what the guy who sold us this trek was thinking! He could not have failed to notice that I was old and very overweight I think somewhere in his head should have popped up the thought she will never do this! Thankfully Alex gave me some wonderful smelling salts which immediately perked me up and I made it to our first camp. There are eight of us in our group, 3 Aussies, 1 Kiwi, 2 Poms and me and Nick. Spent the rest of the day listening to Dan tell many tales of life in Austrailia (not even I could get a word in edgeways which is a very rare occurence)! We all seem to be getting along very well and having a good laugh which is a bonus.
