We arrived in Hue a bit after 1pm and checked into the hotel, La Residence. Hotel is situated in old French governor's building, a beautiful hotel and grounds.
We decided to go down to hotel receptions to get some directions to the nearest supermarket and shopping centre to get some supplies and also to get some lunch. We went to the area where were told there was a shopping centre but due to a misunderstanding we were directed to the shopping area. We found a café, DMZ Cafe and ate lunch then walked back towards the hotel and over the bridge to the supermarket which was in a shopping centre of sorts.
During our walk we were stared at, pointed at and one guy even filmed us walking up the road then shoved his phone in our face. He was lucky his phone didn’t disappear into the river. Rudest people we have come across are in Hue. We bought what we needed from one part of the supermarket then went to go to the other part of the supermarket. We set of the alarm as we entered and a security guard motioned for us to go over to a section where we were asked to leave our purchases from the other part of the supermarket in a locker and to get them when we came out of the shop. After buyig what we needed we walked back to the hotel thoroughly hating Hue and everyone who lived here.
Things got worse when we went out for dinner, we asked at reception for suggestions near the hotel. We were told there were none other than a restaurant for locals and that we either eat at the hotel restaurant (expensive) or go to the other end of town where we had lunch. We decided to check our Lonely Planet for options and decided to eat at a place up the other end of town.
We walked down a street back from the river which was a bit rough in patches and past the hospital and a whole block of pharmacies on our way to the café we picked out. We got to a large intersection and not realising the street we were on changed names we ended up walking back the way we came and only realising when we passed all the pharmacies again. We then cut down to the river and walked back up to where we thought the café was, it wasn’t there.
We had to walk all the way back to the hotel and after 90 minutes of walking around ended up having a can of coke and a kit kat for dinner before going to bed really regretting having another 2 nights after this in Hue!
