We had a nice boat trip to Koh Samui followed by a bus journey to the "main' town called Nathong....We decided to stay there because this is where the next ferry we were taking leaves from. This main town is actually tiny and had absolutly nothing, no bars or places to hang out and the restaurants closed at 5. Well, nothing...I'm exagerating, it did have a tesco hehe! We also very much enjoyed having a TV and watching some films of an evening :)
The day after our arrival we decided to go to the south of the island and visit the aquarium and snake farm. We rented a scooter (we survived so no need to worry) and headed south. It was a really nice drive through small villages and the countryside and we really enjoyed it! The only injury was Tom burning his leg on the exhaust pipe :( although we did try and go into the mountains and were forced to turn back when we ended up in muddy puddles being overtaken by motorcross bikes going 100miles an hour.....pretty funny hehe
We arrived at the Snake farm just in time for the show which consisted of one guy kissing cobras on the head, a lady dancing with scorpions and a poor snake being terrified until it played dead! We did enjoy it, especially when the massive burmese python was shoved on our shoulders. It was sooooo heavy! The snake farm itself was pretty small but interesting to see all the local snakes. Hygene of enclosures was pretty poor but all the animals looked healthy enough.
After the snake farm we headed off to the aquarium. Don't really know what to think of the place, amazing animals that did look healthy but some small tanks, especially sad to see sea turtles and massives sharks swimming round and round in circles. To be honest the worst bit was a tourist shouting at this Leopard to make it Raw!Grrrr and otters swimming in a tiny bowl of water!!!!! All in all, a great day though...
Since then we've come back to the mainland and have spent one night in Surat Tani, not really enjoying the place though so we'r heading off to Malaysia tonight....leaving at half past one in the morning and spending 11 hours in a train, not really looking forward to it but have nothing to do here so might as well keep going. We did enjoy one thing in Surat Tani actually.....The hotel we stayed at had hot water and a flushing toilet Yaay :) something we hadn't had for too long!
Bring on Malaysia :)
Love Tom & kim
