Day 15
Speed Weenies live to ride another day
Here it is, just a hair over 2 weeks into my trip, and I've spent the last 3 days now riding with Bobby & Suede (the speed weenies) and its So weird to be back on US soil. I was so used to doing things the way Canadians do things I suppose, and albeit minor things like how you pump your gas, etc... I just got acustomed to doing these things, and now have to re-train myself that I am back on US soil, and it feels good.
We ride up to Fairbanks Alaska today, which is my farthest point North on this journey. I wanted to go farther north, but found out from other riders that the roads are unpaved and just not passable unless you had a dirt bike or something.
By the way, I woke up from the campsite this morning to SUN!!! amazing, when it actually happens lately. Though...I must say, that we got DRENCHED riding late in the day at about 3PM. sigh
I saw some AMAZING mountains and glaciers today. None of course that I got pics of, as the only good places to get shots, were on bridges..which is NEVER a good place to stop and try to photograph something before a truck comes barreling down the highway.
We got into Fairbanks about mid afternoon, and .....and.......well, its a dump!!!! I'm not really sure what I expected, but it wasnt this! I thought it would be some really cool, quirkey, trendy town. Not even close. just a boring drab poop town. Oddly enough, the hotels here were REALLY overpriced so I made the decision to press on south towards Anchorage (which is about 300 miles away) but hoped to find a mom & pop motel for much less money then here in pooptown...I mean Fairbanks.
To be honest, with the exception of the Mountains and Glaciers I saw today, Alaska has been a bit of a disapointment...really. My first MAJOR stop and kind of a let down. Well maybe Anchorage will be 100x better. The Yukon and BC were much more amazing.
Of course now, after riding about 30 minutes. the rains came down. hard! Im sure your sick of reading about rain, HELL im sick of typing about it, riding in it...living in it actually.
I am still riding with Bobby and Suede. This will be our last ride, since they have to head back to washington tomorrow, and I will continue on my journey alone to Anchorage.
We managed to find this little tiny town of about 3 blocks long, called Nenana. Its RIGHT out of that TV show Northern Exposure. and was actually kind of cool. EVERYTHING was closed here, except the little room we rented for the night, one bar/resteraunt, and a small laudremat that felt the need to play preaching gospel music and at a very loud volume.
I'm really missing everyone a lot today. Im thinking of cutting my trip short, but not exactly sure when or where. We'll see. I love hearing from everyone, and miss everyone tons. This is a pretty amazing journey. but sometime I get lost and don't really know why Im doing it...other then to see the world, and see what it has to show me.
It's just hard to be away and miss the ones you love
270 miles today
4,926 total miles
PS, Alaska is 60 degrees today, but it sure feels much colder then that. more like 30.
