Early start to the day today - up at 7:30 to go to yoga! We've found a really great studio just round the corner from where we live. Gary & Cythia Fort run it in their house - they've converted the whole bottom floor, and it looks out onto beautiful gardens - really peaceful, and a brilliant way to start the day.
So got back to the apartment for breakfast, and then had to go and be fingerprinted! The access to the block is completely biometric, with the ladies who run the complex office telling us proudly that they have the same technology as the South African Police Service. They take their supervisory responsibilities really seriously here, but I guess they have to with crime levels as they are.
Crime is on everyone's mind. It shows in that one of the biggest news items at the moment is about the shooting of a gang of armed robbers who attacked a security convoy at a casino in Johannesburg. The police had information on the raid, set up an ambush and killed 11 out of 12 members of the gang. This topic is keeping the talk radio shows busy, and although South Africa recently did away with the death penalty, almost everyone who called in (all genders, races, walks of life) were supportive of the police's very draconian measures. People are sick of crime, and particularly the shadow of violence.
Anyway - that's enough rambling about the state of the nation ...
...So after getting two fingers scanned, we set off to Boulders to visit Cape Town's best known colony of penguins, and had an afternoon on the beach. Swam in the sea, which was @*&!! cold, and caught up on some R&R in the sun.
We then drove over to Noordhoek beach - I'd forgotten how beautiful and also how big it is ... and came back over Chapman's Peak to meet the folks for dinner on the beachfront.
Otherwise all's going well - getting ready for another early night.
