Hey everyone sorry we havent done an update for so long, we tried to at ruths but the computer froze so we couldnt finish it. We had an amazing few days on fraser island, apparently it rains there 200 days a year so we were really lucky to have 3 days of bright blue skies. We stayed at a place called king fisher bay resort which wasnt great, when we got into our room we were greeted by a huge cockroach!! But we didnt spend too much time there so it didnt matter. On our first day we went to lake McKenzie which was absolutely gorgeous, there were two beaches, the first was packed, but we walked round to the second beach and it was empty nobody else could be bothered doing the 5 minute walk so we enjoyed having the whole beach to ourselves! Tris went snorkelling and saw some freshwater turtles. We also went to the rainforest in the middle of the island and had a walk through there. The second day we drove along 75 mile beach which is amazing, and stopped off at the maheno shipwreck. Next we drove to the champagne pools the only place you can swim in the sea on the whole island, the water surrounding the island is full of tiger and bull sharks which are really agressive so you cant get in the water on any of the beaches. The champagne pools are huge rock pools overlooking the ocean with loads of fish and crabs. We were sat on the rocks looking out over the water and 2 whales leapt out right in front of us which was really spectacular to see. Later that day we went to Indian head one of the only rock peninsulas on the island, the rest of the island is sand!! We climbed to the top and had a really good view of the sea we saw lots of whales from the viewpoint, a turtle and a huge manta ray which was the same size as the cars on the beach below us!! On the way back to the resort we stopped at eli creek for another swim, it was really nice here, its like a natural lazy river ride, you walk up to the top of the creek and then swim back down to the beach letting the current carry you down stream. On our final day we had a walk through the bush and up some huge sand dunes to lake wabby before moving on in the afternoon to lake birrabeen, both were really pretty. On the way back to the ferry our bus encountered a few problems, all the roads on the island are sand tracks so you need a 4wd, our bus was really struggling up the hills and after attempting to get up a really steep incline about 10 times the gear box on our bus went and we were stuck in the middle of the island!! We all had to sit on the track and wait to be rescued by a mechanic, when the mechanic eventually came he managed to get us up the hill, and we then had to drive in first gear the whole way to the barge that we were catching back to the mainland. We only just made it to the barge which they had to hold for us, we had already missed the ferry we were meant to be catching back, so that was an exciting end to the trip. We got back to our campsite at about 7 that night absolutely filthy from sitting on the sand track.
The next day we were up at 5.30 to go whale watching. We chose to go with a company called thats awesome, they have a speed boat that gets you out to the whales way faster than any of the other boats and is far less crowded, i think there were only about 10 people on our boat so that was good. We found the whales after about 40 minutes and saw 2 mums and their calfs, we managed to get really close and stayed with them for about an hour and a half watching them play together. On the way back we found some calm water and they did doughnuts and fishtails which was really fun, the boat is scarily fast when its at full speed!! We also saw some dolphins on the way back into hervey bay. When we got back we packed up the van and set off for brisbane.
