Families are friendly, always smiling and often joking, it all seems very genuine too, they are genuinely happy to have a visit. Tourists come and go, filling a hectic morning for the islanders, giving them a chance to sell some reed souvenirs or intricate weavings, of which are absolutely stunning. They sell the most amazing handmade bright and colourful pieces, table runners, material wall hangings.
These will take them months to finish by hand and are relatively expensive in comparison to those bought on the mainland, which are machine made so the special touch is lost. Several woven pieces told a story with pictures, some historic and others the making of the island. They were all uniquely different, we loved them. The money they make from these they are sooo grateful for and will give you a hug and a kiss on the cheek for buying. This money they will spend in the mainland markets on essentials and buy materials for more craft work.
After having a look at their crafts and chatting with them we had to line up and say our name and where we were from, they would then clap and smile from ear to ear. They really were very sweet people. Our group consisted of three different languages from there they sang to us in all three languages, swaying and clapping. It was great.
You can either take the motorboat to the next stop or pay 10 soles (40p) and sit on the reed boat and Rhaole and fellow islander would row you to another island but not before a friendly so long and an un-expected 'esta la vista baby!!' joined with a big hip swing and 'wooo!' from the lady islanders.
The currants were strong but we made it there. Rhaole told us that the river itself was 18 metres deep whereas underneath each island was no more than 2 metres, Sitting next to us was a young islander girl who loved the camera, she would pose and love to see the photo.
We arrived at another island for a brief stop, there you can get a drink or even have your passport stamped. Fifteen minutes there then we headed back to mainland.
This has been my favourite tour of the whole trip so far, so interesting and spent with lovely genuine people. They made some money and we had a great day.
