Unfortunately a lot of our time meant for Huanchaco was spent sorting my bag or trying to replace my missing things.
Casa Fresh hostel was right on the seafront, it was lovely, clean with a terrace overlooking the sea. Arriving on a Sunday there was plenty of atmosphere, fresh seafood everywhere and locals surfing or practising their gymnastics (mainly the boys, they seem to love it here).
We walked the long stretch of the beach had some lumpy soup for tea and treated ourselves to some bakery goods which was conveniently sold seconds from our hostel.
We met some nice people here, also got slightly attached to the hostels ping-pong table, both at a professional standard by the end of our stay.
The following day we visited Trujillo. Founded by Francisco Pizzaro in 1534, this insanely colourful colonial city has changed little since its inception. While Trujillo's importance in Peruvian history is secure — we were told it was the first city in the country to declare independence from Spain — this destination rarely makes it onto the itinerary of travellers through South America, more of a bus stop to get to Huancacho.
We spent half our day with the Feds reporting my bag and the other half walking the city. We made it back to Huanchaco for sunset via the collectivo buses, charging only 1.50 soles each ride.
