Unfortunately another day wasted by travel our two trip bus journey gets us to Popayan in the dark. The bus journeys take a long time to get anywhere, when driving their un maintained winding mountain roads. There's also never a loo ('banos' -learnt that Spanish word) on the bus, these people never 'go' I don't get it. The bone shacking rollercoaster buses are also not the most relaxing, hanging on for dear life is a must unless your fine clearing the surface of your seat every few metres.
Popayan is more of a hop to get to the next destination. A nice town but no more than two nights needed here.
There was a Colombian vs. Peru football match on the following day. We walked the city and the locals make themselves comfy in any shop possible to watch the match. With TV's in the street, in the take-away and the local supermarket they pitch up a chair and enjoy the game, giving out a great atmosphere.
I've managed to get ill over the last day so I have been mostly bed bound in Popayan but rest needed. A mix of malaria tablets, altitude and poor eating.
Everything is that much more difficult when there is such a language barrier. Our Spanish is practically non-existent but we have picked up a few essential words/phrases but still it is really hard. My one regret of this trip is not learning the language.
