We arrived at Khao Sok late afternoon and checked into our cool hut on stilts at Nung House, with a full mozzie net fitted meaning Al might actually sleep without the constant itching through the night! We went for a stroll through Khao Sok village to explore & it was a lovely small place with a few restaurants, bars & tour agencies. We went to eat at a busy place (the fairy lights sold it to Tracy) & it was faulty towers in terms of the service…after receiving the wrong order after about an hours wait it was time for bed, that's relaxed Thai rural life!
On our second day we headed into the park, solo, who needs a guide when you've been to Taman Negara, we are experts…so we thought. We checked out the trails and decided to go for the 4km walk to the largest 7 tiered waterfall, we would probably have time to do another walk in the afternoon.4 hours later after trekking through the forest, crossing the river many times (picking off the pesky leeches along the way) & cursing the lack of sign posts/path, we arrived at the waterfall to a standing ovation from a group of 5 Irish trekkers, who we had seen earlier and who had also spent half the morning thinking where are the bloody signs!!You can see it was no Niagra Falls, but it was still a nice scene and the satisfied feeling of making it after nearly giving up half a dozen times (it was getting dark!) did feel good.
As with Taman Negara it was possible to see wild elephants (warning signs everywhere!), monkeys, wild cats etc….not a chance, although we did see some huge spiders, including the funnel webs with their eyes peering from the tunnel, and Butterflies, oh and the odd giant Ant!The wildlife highlight was Boris the friendly lizard (the biggest one we had seen yet).Boris became our roommate at Khao Sok after we spent over an hour, armed with toilet pan thing & bucket, plus the help of the German couple next door; trying to free him from our bungalow without success… we decided maybe he just wanted to stay with us!
We decided to eat at a local place which had no other customers, which would normally be a bad sign, but it was by the river & we were hungry…. the food was just the best we have had so we ate here again the next night... or maybe it was so Al could see the Everton v Chelsea game!
Our final day was spent leisurely exploring a couple of easily accessible waterfalls and a large natural pool.By fluke we managed to find a hidden away area where the water formed a natural Jacuzzi…we could have spent days there it was heavenly!
We loved it here, peaceful, relaxing, beautiful forest & elephants hiding somewhere……
