We arrived in Hong Kong on the 6th Nov via train and a battle to complete the form and find our way through to cross the border. We eventually found our pad, the YWCA, comically located on Man Fuk Road, honest! The cheapest bed in town, but pretty good and we extended our stay twice.
We both loved HK as it was easier going, modern and less hard work with no need to fumble our way.Our time here was really relaxed. For the first couple of days we stayed in and around Kowloon, including the park, mad shopping street Nathan Road where every few meters you'd be asked `suitwatchhandbagpursebeltwalletjewelleryhashish' without a pause for breath!
At night the view over to Hong Kong Island was amazing, with the offices all lit up.
We ventured to HK Island on the local Star Ferry for the next couple of, which was a bargain 15p (not much in HK is cheap!).While there we took a ride on the Peak Tram to the highest point where the views and sunset were great. In the evening we ventured into Wan Chai, which is hooker heaven with loads of western men hooking up with local girls young enough to be their granddaughters, gross!! Was lively, but fairly expensive (geared up for westerners with more money than sense). We also ventured into Soho, which was the opposite and had loads of windy roads, bars and restaurants. We headed for happy hour in one and people watched armed with beers and free monkey nuts.Once the happy hour finished we found a street café and tucked into cheap beer and food with the locals.
On the next day we got the boat to Lantau Island and headed to Tai-O, a traditional fishing village full of stilted houses and smelly dried fish stalls. We we're collared by a local who took us into the community, it felt a bit uneasy at times as we passed through peoples homes, eventually he flogged us some paper which was supposed to bring luck, we knew he had a hidden agenda so we munched some of his dried fruit before agreeing a knockdown price (was quite tasty!)
