Due to a lack of WW2 knowledge we had never heard of this place, but we stumbled across it in our guidebook, & it is famous for the Bridge over the river Kwai as in the movie.
We arrived in a bright blue wooden sweat hut we would call home for three nights via Tuk-Tuk, our first trip in one so far somehow, despite the 3000 offers!!
The town is famous for being the site of the 'death railway' and so we spent our first day in the Death Museum which was really harrowing learning about the war in Asia & the horrific plight of the Allied POWs and locals forced into being slaves to build the railway for the Japanese army, 100,000+ died in building the railway. We visited the cemetery next door & the number of headstones seemed endless.
In the evening we headed out for a decent meal & hopefully Tracy's first glass of wine since leaving the UK… decided to blow the budget as was Tracy's birthday!!Found a little place & tucked into a huge mixed platter dish, North Thai style.Al loved it as loads of meat!No wine on the menu but Tracy consoled herself with a Mai Tai cocktail… followed by a couple of beers in a friendly little bar up the road… we declined the bars with the girls telling Al he was a handsome man & `welcome, welcome'!
The next day we booked onto a tour of the area including the natural hot baths, a waterfall (decent one this time!), hellfire pass, including another museum, a trip on the death railway itself (spectacular views), an elephant trek (Tracy loved this especially the bruises as we were thrown about on Dumbo's back!) and finally bamboo rafting. The latter was the lowlight of the trip!As we adorned the life jackets we kept an eye out for the crash helmets, safety conscious as we are when it comes to extreme sports……well no helmets, typical Thailand safety… we thought better be careful then.As we boarded the raft with roof and 12yr old in charge we soon realised that we were actually being towed 1km up the river and then leisurely floating back again….the 12yd old doing the minimal steering without the need for assistance…..what an anti-climax!!!
A strange occurrence here was the lovely café in town.Nice as it was, in our first two visits here we saw a drive by window smash on a tattoo shop opposite, with subsequent moped hunt for the perpetrators, then the next time a near fatal truck and moped smash literally right in front of us…how the guy got up after being launched into a somersault 8ft in the air I will never know….any ideas of moped hire went out the window after witnessing that!!Al tried to help him out, but luckily he was able to sort himself out the ambulance arrived took a quick look at him and did….nothing!
On the 2nd night we met up with Ash and Bee who we had got chatting too on the tour of Kanchanaburi and headed back to the café of doom for grub and a few drinks…and then a few more! The staff members were great, actually going into town to get the Samsum Rum we were ordering when they ran out, Three bottles later it was time for bed! Lovely place …. Thai Tai it was called so will remember that one!
