After Krabi we set off by longtail boat to Rai Leh, just 20 mins from Krabi. The area was accessible only by boat and so felt like an island, we arrived on the east side(not so impressive) which was all boggy mangroves - and had to walk from the boat to shore with backpacks as too shallow for the boat!We settled in the excellent Cabana resort, after a good haggle for the price, which was lovely little chalets set back in gorgeous mountain views & greenery, we headed to the west beach which is the posh side with nice resorts & restaurants & a beautiful beach. The third beach (Phanang) was the best beach of our trip so far, really clear water & mountains' in the back drop, plus a cave full of colorful penises… this is an offering to the sea goddess by the locals, nothing perverse! The island seemed to be one huge tribute to Bob Marley, most of the guys sported his style, haircut and respective tattoo's!This was a place where you relaxed on cushions by night listening to reggae (no choice!) and enjoying the sound of the waves, we could have stayed here a lot longer.
The accommodation was also great with Bob Marley No.43 running the place with a big campfire set up by the bar and cushions all around on a raised platform. The photos should give a good idea.
In town we found a great little café which introduced us to Sum Tam (spicy papaya salad) which is now a regular, finally Tracy found a way of getting me to eat veggies without protest! The shop selling the Sum Tam also provided internet, tours, sold handmade bags and included a hairdressers…all in one hut!
