Got to Ko Phi Phi mid afternoon and we were greeted by the most beautiful, picturesque island we had visited so far. On the pier we met our cheeky, chappy luggage carrier Yam Yam (not his real name but we felt it fitted his cheeky little face!). Having to push a full cart up some very steep hills and not being the biggest man in the world we decided we'd offer him a helping hand.
Went for wander around the island and soon came across Tsunami affected areas and building structures still in the process of being rebuilt. After speaking to a few locals they told us that the island was hit from every angle and they had to run to higher ground to escape the waves. That evening we went to a few establishments and eateries and a bar that was offering a free vodka bucket for anyone that was willing to step in to a Thai boxing ring and fight. No surprise a big, fat, English lout (no not Chris!) was one of the first to come forward in order to get free alchohol and have a punch up - and people stereotype Brits abroad?!?
The next morning we lounged around and topped up the sunburn. In the afternoon we maybe foolishly decided to sign up for some cliff jumping and shark diving. Thinking the shark diving may involve a big group we werent too concerned until we turned up at the meeting place to find there was only three of us! We got a long boat out to the reef and pondered for a while whether it was a good idea to enter the shark infested waters. Not wanting to waste 200 Baht (3 Pound!) we went for it. We were so glad we did as we saw some of the most amazingly coloured tropical fish and bright blue and yellow corals. After swimming further out we encountered 2m long sharks gliding through the water just feet from us - sh*t! Needless to say the water quickly turned brown - could somebody please send us some new trunks!
Then it was on to some cliff jumping but first we had to traverse some jagged and slippery rocks to reach the diving point. Once we got to the jump point - which was just another jagged rock - we looked over the cliff edge into the sea 10m below and the fear really kicked in! After eventually gaining some testicular fortitude we decided to go for it and leap! What an adrenaline rush it was! After a few more jumps Gav decided to jump even higher at 14m for some real hang time!
We then visited Monkey Beach to see and feed the monkeys that inhabited the shoreline. They were obviously very used to tourists as they ate the bananas directly from the palm of our hands - the greedy gits!
The next stop was Maya Beach across the choppy waters as it was a seperate island. This is where "The Beach" was filmed and Gav was hoping Leo might be there - no such luck! What a surreal vision the island was, one that words could never describe and pictures could never do justice - wow!
The whole day was an unforgettable experience, one that we would never have missed, and unfortunately for you guys at home we have a 15 minute DVD of it all to bore you with!
On to Ko Lanta now for some more sun, sand, sea and hopefully some of the other!
