Tom and Becky Down Under!
Having slept on the floor on our overnight crossing to Melbourne, Elvis decided to break down on us just as we were pulling off the ferry. Having been jumpstarted by the guys on the ferry, we then broke down again outside the caravan park we were to stay in for the next 5 days. Having had the battery changed, we spent the afternoon at Melbourne Zoo, which was a bit crammed and the animals were very sad!! Tom bought an elephant beanie (Emily) to keep wilbur company.
On Friday (23/12) we got up early for the Queen Victoria Market, a huge market near the centre of Melbourne, 60% of which sells the freshest fruit and veg around.... Onto Melbourne Gaol next, where the legendry Ned Kelly was hung, and then onto the shops. Federation square was next on the cards, and carrying on with my tradition of coming across aussie cricketers, we bumped into the entire Australian cricket team. Having got 7 autographs (Hayden, Ponting, McGrath, Bracken, Hodge, Hussey, Lee) and a nice photo of Warne, we made our way to the Ian Potter Centre, a large Art Gallery. Tom wasn't in the mood for art and found great amusement in the paintings of naked women.....child!! Cooks Cottage in Fitzroy gardens was cute, dismantled several years ago in Yorkshire and reconstructed brick by brick in these quiet gardens....it's not even known whether Captain Cook lived in it for long, if at all!!
We intended to spend the evening watching a film on the big screen in the botanic gardens, but a large amount of rain saw the end of that. Instead, we got ourselves in the Christmas spirit and went to see Polar Express at the Imax....
Christmas Eve saw us on Ramsey Street!! We passed Erinsborough High (where we had to put the sign up on the fence as it's real use is a language school) and also the studios (the gates of which are the current prison gates at dillon and stingrays jail). The street itself is sooooo small and is actually called Pinoak Court. Lou's old house (now lived in by Paul), Harolds house, the Timonds house, The kennedy's house, Toady and Stuarts house and Max and Stephs house are all lived in in real live, and the residents get paid huge amounts of cash for the inconvenience of all the filming and publicity going on outside their front door. Apparently there's a 15 year waiting list for one of those houses!! The actors only get paid $1-5K a week..... And Malcolm Kennedy (remember him?!) now works in a burger bar in St. Kilda just south of Melbourne city centre.
Christmas Day was a relatively relaxed day, the main focus being food!! We made the biggest cooked brekkie either of us had ever eaten, stuffed ourselves with chocolate and sweets and cooked ourselves a large steak with 5 veg for dinner (the gravy was thinner than water, but it was still good!!)
Boxing day was Toms day....we headed to the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) to watch the start of the Boxing day test match, Australia vs. South Africa..... it was a bit of a slow match, leading me to become incredibly restless, but we stayed till the end nevertheless!!
