Today we awoke up to an extremely wet and gloomy day in Haast, very pleased we had predicted the forecast correctly, and chose to sleep inside! We lazily got ready to leave this sand fly infested area behind with a trip to Milford Sound. We stopped off a Te Anau before awaking the next day to head on to Milford Sound. Milford Sound is a valley carved by a glacier and is now flooded by the sea, they know it was cut by a glacier because the bottom of the valley is ?U? shaped where as if carved by a river is would be ?V? shaped. The day was cold to start with but soon warmed up, we had moved out ferry trip time from 11 to 9am and thank god we did the 9am trip had 15 people on it including about 5 or 6 crew, it was like being very rich and we were able to buy a whole ship! The crews is self last about an hour of so and takes you with in inches of the cliffs, you can actually stand in a water fall it gets that close. It is at that point you realise how big and powerful it all is. Due to the lack of people on the vessel we were aloud into the cabin to talk to the captain who was also the tour guide. This was a bonus as we were able to get more info than they normally put out over the speakers. Just after my chat with him I popped back to the top deck to see what I could see and, what I saw was a seal feeding, fish jumping everywhere and the seal too. From the shore you can see a crater that has cloud in it, no cloud in the sky anywhere but this one crater had you can see in to it as it is ¾ of a circle, it take the cloud up to 5 days to climb over the walls of the place. (Only one person has ever climbed these walls and it took him 2 days I think they said, what?s more he did it in bare feet) The town is quite small only 400 people in the winter and up to 1000 in the summer. All the electricity and water is supplied by a water fall, despite the place being in the middle of no where it is truly an amazing place and well worth a visit.
