A road trip today with Sean at the wheel, Jimmy 'Scot-nav', and the girls in the back with a flask of hot coffee and a packet of Tim-Tams (chocolate biscuits!). We took the Taihape Road from Napier to Taihape,
through the Ruahani Range with views of the snow on the caps of Kawaka at 1724m. Passed through Sherenden- a small village. A few hailstones on the way.
Sheep filled fields with lots of cute lambs frolicking. We could see Tongariro National Park in the distance - our destination for the 'Volcanic Loop'
Taihape to Waiouru. After driving for quite a while we stopped for a stretch of the legs and on our second stop had pies & coffee at Angkor Wat Bakery & Coffee Shop opposite the Army Museum. Tasty homemade deep filled pies were enjoyed by all. On to Ohakune where unfortunately the rain clouds obscured any views of the snow capped Mt Ruapehu. So we drove back, chasing the blu skies and leaving the clouds way behind, stopping occasionally for photos and a look at one of the historic bridges- Springvale suspension bridge built in 1925 by William Salt giving farmers a reliable vehicle crossing to transport wool and meat safely over the Rangitikei River to the port at Napier. A newer road bridge which runs parallel to the suspension bridge was built in 1970 due to heavier traffic. Fortunately the old Bridge was saved from demolition and has been owned and managed by Heritage New Zealand since 1974.
Plan to go to the Blossom Festival in Hastings tomorrow but the weather forecast is not good!
