We woke early and were greeted with a beautiful sunrise and peaceful views from our room. The Waikawa harbour just along from Picton was where we stayed in the motel Bay Vista- managed by really nice people, Kerry and John. They drove us into Picton in the morning and with newly found energy we embraced what Picton had on offer. After booking a hire car to pick up tomorrow for our onward journey south, we stumbled upon a fantastic museum telling the story of the 'Edwin Fox'- a ship with a history! I'll add detail about this fascinating vessel at a later date but a really interesting story and close up experience! Following this we embarked on a 5 hour cruise of the Queen Charlotte Sound aboard the 'Mail Run'- a boat delivering all sorts of packages and mail to remote points and secluded coves. This was a most enjoyable trip, with the skipper, Julian, relating various interesting stories and facts along the way. We even got a 15 minute chance to step off at Captain James Cook's Inlet. Along the way we were entertained by Dusky dolphins somersaulting around the boat and bottle-nosed dolphins too. It was indeed a 'magic mail run' as the brochures describe. Another exhausting day but we walked the 5 km back via the Jolly Roger for well earned refreshments. Spent the rest of the evening, what was left of it, planning our journey to stop somewhere south of Christchurch- a long drive- on our way to Dunedin.
