Finally arrived at 10pm after a long 12 hour journey from Rio Galleogas....including a brief ferry across the infamous ship wreck Magellen Straits and four border crossings going in and out of Chile and back into Argie! But it was totally worth it......and we up staying for a week at the End of the Earth!
Ushuaia is the world's most southerly town and the only place on earth where the mountains meet the ocean....it is absolutely amazing, just massive snow capped Andes mountains all around and huge blue skies. But is is bloody freezing....not so surprising being only 1000km from Antarctica and a whooping 13900km from London (we feel soooo far from home just now!!) ....proper misty breath and white fingers job! And we are both yearning for a pair of thermal long johns!
On the first day we scaled the Martial Glacier....well, we rode a cheeky chairlift to the base and then climbed for an hour scrambling up the side of the mountain until we were in proper snow....after a while admiring the view and chucking snowballs around we trekked around the mountain to see the view of the End of the World....!!! It was sooooo cold but pretty cool...hehe!
Spent one day on a 4x4 off road jeep ride to the Lakes....it was mental....our driver was rather odd, chatted about the black holes in his head and drove like a crazy person...at one point the jeep was at a 35 degree angle in mud with sheer drops on the other side while ominous bangs came from underneath....he dealt with the problem by driving at break neck speed through the lake while me and Tim tried not to keep landing on other peoples laps! The lakes were great though and we had a fab lunch in a tiny log cabin right on the shore.
Forced to abandon plans to sail on a tiny yacht into the bay to visit the world's last lighthouse after the engine literally blew a gasket....but caught another trip and got up close and personal with the stinky sealions which swam alongside the boat and watched an amazing sunset!!! This place is one the most beautiful places we have been to so far......shame its such a long way away!
Did a city tour one afternoon bizarrely riding an original hop on-hop off London bus (we have no idea how it got here!)....although you never get a free hot chocolate thrown in back home!
We have been really lucky with the weather and only had one day of rain, typically on the day we trekked through the National Park....not the best walk ever....spent mostly drudging through peat bogs...on plus side we only fell over once each! And the next morning we woke up to proper snowing..........!
In keeping with travelling traditions we have eaten like kings and treated ourselves to King Crab one night and all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet - Argie style. Tops! Partied in the Dublin Irish pub (there really is an Irish pub everywhere on earth!) and lost muchos pesos in the casino......
Heading back up North tomorrow....feels like a real turning point in our trip like we have gone as far as we can and now we are on the way home......
