We had an early pick up this morning at 7am to get the boat to Koh Phi Phi! We were in a minivan that had a group if overly chatty Chinese people, they drove me insane at 7 in the morning!
The ride there was like a clip out of fast and furious, only the race cars were minivans! There were loads of them all going to the same ferry port!
We got there, had a sticker slapped on us and told that we were on big boat number three, we had to climb over the other two to get to ours! We were the only westerners on there for a short while until another 2-3 couples jumped on board. There were Asian tourists all around; and they love a selfie! I'm sure that's the only the thing they know how to so on their phone! That and get an English translator up.
The boat ride was about two hours long, Scott fell asleep catching flies for the entire time. I thought it was a pretty bumpy ride but he obviously thought different because he wouldn't have been able to sleep otherwise. (So he says! I believe he can sleep anywhere!)
Pulling up into Koh Phi Phi, the water was crystal blue, it was gorgeous! Surrounded by limestone islands and rocks with trees and shrubbery growing out of it. Just by arriving at the pier we were surprised, we assumed that there was hardly anything on the island, heard that we had to walk through water waist high to get on to the actual island. The lonely planet book even lied and said that there weren't any ATMs; we arrived to loads of little tour booking offices, little alley ways full of boutiques, cafés, bakeries, restaurants (snazzy and cheapy) dive shops and some really posh hotels along the beach and there were ATMs everywhere! The place had a nice feel about it, there isn't any vehicles on the island and a taxi is a metal troff on wheels that you put your bag in and walk along side it, so it's a taxi for your bag basically.
Of course a 7/11 made it on to the island, they get everywhere and a bloody Irish bar; they get everywhere too!
You can tell the island got hit hard by the tsunami, in the main little town where everything was and the only part of the island that's I inhabited is flat so the wave would have washed right though from one side to the other, apparently the island hasn't been helped much by the authorities to rebuild and it shows, there is still a lot of abandoned little shops and there's a lot of building work going on, the paths are still being laid. I'd say give this place another 2-3 years and it will be perfect, of course there will be building here constantly because more people will discover it and want to come to this place but the necessities and foundations will be there.
It took us ages to get to our hotel, everyone we asked just kept pointing to go straight and turn right. We eventually found it, we were probably there furthest away from the pier, it's basic but nice and thank god we have air con because it's boiling here! Scott was more thankful that we were up on a slight hill on the top level (just incase) haha!
We got told that it's expensive here and not much going on but it seems as though there's lots of parties going on in the evenings and lots of nice restaurants that you could happily sit in a evening and eat and drink. You can make it cheap if you want with a 7/11 or we spotted a noodle soup stand for 50baht per dish.
They definitely aren't short of massage parlours and tattoo shops, I'm sure within being on the island 10 minutes I counted at least 15! They are next door to each other and opposite one another, don't know how they get any business at all! I think they pass the time by practicing on each other because a lot of them are head to toe plastered in tattoos.
We went to a restaurant and had NOODLE SOUP! Finally, we found good noodle soup!
The beach was gorgeous, the water had the blue crystal touch to it and the sand was white! A few shacks along the way and lots speed boats offering water sports, the heat was unbearable!
The lime stone rocks curved in to make the beach look more like a little cove. It was really nice! We relaxed here all afternoon and had a shake each freshen up. I had a strawberry shake and Scott had an Oreo one! They were yummy!
We gave in to the heat about 3.30 and went to book a day trip around the the islands and snorkelling spots for tomorrow and a ferry over to Koh Lanta for the day after.
It's nice here but not loads to do for more than 3 nights, I guess after that you'd get a little bored if you weren't a total beach bum.
We went out for dinner early compared to everyone else, afterwards we headed down to the beach to watch the fire show, there was a westerner playing with fire and she was pretty good swinging it around and Dancing with it!
We had a go at the limbo and jump rope afterwards, Scott wasn't great at the limbo bless him. He isn't the most flexible! Once the bar goes to chest height he's done! Haha.
